Which Affiliate Program Is Right For You?

There are many affiliate programs and ways to go about affiliate marketing. When beginners look at all there is to offer on the internet, it is easy to get confused.

Tip #1 - Take your time!!!

This is the most important thing to remember. Keep this in your mind at all times. Program your mind to be patient. Many programs wield the promise of so called "Instant Profit Systems" or similar names. Everyone; has seen them and they all seem to have their own unique gimmick. There is no way to be instantly successful with affiliate marketing programs, you can learn this by paying for it, or you can simply accept it at the start.

Tip #2 - See All there is to offer.

There are so many affiliate marketing guides on the internet now that it is hard to choose which ones are hokey and bogus and which ones are tried and true formulas for success. You can find examples of these guides here:

Feel free to check those out but don't feel the need to choose the first one you see, or any for that matter. You can search through as many of these sites as your can find to see what they all offer.

Tip #3 - Programs that utilize Craiglist and Backpage are becoming obsolete!

These classified listing sites are very difficult to use as they are becoming overly populated with spam and are very strict. Some scams have been known to get around this, but none of which are worth the hassle in my humble opinion.

Bulk Lists and the 'Zombie Computer'

'Bulk Lists' are probably the worst kinds of lists because they were 'harvested' using automated software
programs that scourer Web Pages for email addresses. There have been many efforts to combat 'email harvesting'
by encoding email addresses a certain way or to simply use an HTML Submission form that hides the recipients
email address altogether. Unfortunately, many people freely place their email addresses in 'Talk Forums' and
on their Personal Web Pages. Spammers then collect 'harvested bulk lists' which are nothing more than a list of
email addresses, some working, some not. These 'bulk lists' are then used as the fuel for spam which is delivered by
using 'zombie computers'.

A 'zombie computer' is one where a hacker has secretly placed mal/spyware (a virus) on an average everyday user
home computer. (Typically users running Microsoft Windows) Since, many operating systems lack sufficient security,
anyone with a computer connected to the internet could potentially be infected and turned into a computer that
the spammers can control under the noses of the computer owner. According to some estimates, 50-75% of all the
spam sent out into the World Wide Web is sent using 'zombie computers'.

I recommend installing mal/spyware detection and removal software, anti-virus software and ensure your computer's firewall is
On. This will help prevent your own machine from becoming a 'zombie computer'. Keep in mind that it is a never ending
'arms race' between the hackers that support spammers, Operating Systems (DeskTops) and anti-virus software makers. I would
like to suggest Comodo.com as they provide 100% free anti-virus, malware and advanced Firewall software! There is also the popular
LavaSoft Spyware remove tool that has a free and paid version.

To take it a step further, I recommend running a Linux Desktop such as Ubuntu (ubuntu.com) or PCLinuxOS (pclinuxos.com).
Linux is an alternative to Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X Operating Systems. Linux is arguabley the most secure
Operating System in the world.

However, the #1 thing we can all do is never open email attachments or run any programs you
download from the internet, unless you are certain it is safe to do so. Sometimes, it is hard to tell
but that is what the mal/spyware software is useful for. It helps detect these viruses and quarantins them
before they can 'burrow' into your hard drive and turn your own machine into a spammer controlled mail server!

Mailing Lists

This is a 'touchy' subject as it has political implications. 'Mailing Lists' are currently legal
and protected under the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003. These types of lists are even more massive than 'Bulk Lists' because
large corporations collect email addresses, typically after a product/service purchase is made on the internet. Or,
by running a raffle, lottery or 'entering to win your free...whatever'.

We have all seen the check boxes that state, 'Do you wish to receive notifications about products
our company may offer in the future?'. Or something similar to that. Sometimes the checkbox is checked
for you and you must uncheck it before clicking OK. This makes it very easy for people
to simply not see or not completely read what they just agreed to! Yes, most of us are in a hurry and do
not have the time to read everything on these Web Pages. Especially those that are cluttered with
ADs and loads of small print, often with the font set to a color in order to make it difficult to spot.

After your email address (knowingly or not) gets on one of these large
corporate 'mailing lists', you are subject to your email address being sold off, often to other large
corporations participating in a sharing of customer 'mailing lists'. Yet, more dangerous is the selling of small
'portions' of the huge mailing lists to anyone willing to buy them.

This then begs the questions, "How does anyone know if the people that are buying these email addresses are not
spammers themselves or just advertisers not knowing the difference between self control and over mailing?
Also, what if they buy a portion of a list only to then turn around and sell them off themselves?" As a result,
that purchase you made a week earlier, could turn into your email address being transfered or sold to anyone that
wants to buy it!

An example of telemarketing (telephone) based spam, we have all seen those brand new cars in the middle of a busy
shopping mall. Passer bys are presented with a simple 'sign up to win this car' form which, collects your name, address and
telephone number via a drop box. Within a few days you are called, via telephone, by up to 5 different companies trying to persuade
you to buy into completely unrelated products/services as compared to that car you entered to win! If you submitted your
home mailing address, you will receive untold amounts of 'postal snail mail'! Email addresses are obtained, sold and transfer
in much the same fashion, only this time using the internet and email as the communication medium. (So, in a way we can all
be wary of receiving spam on 3 different mediums. Telephone, Home Mailing Address and Email Address.)

To give credit where credit is due, these corporations are following Federal Laws, in particular the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003. This 'Act'
states that if you click on the remove me link in the email ad the corporation has no more than 30 days to
completely flush your email address from their mailing list system. The reason the CAN-SPAM Act allows a full
30 days to let them process the removal request is because by then your email address may have probagated to
several dozens of other mailing lists and so the combined corporations need to update their unsubscribe
lists, collectively.

Remember, that telephone number you could call that would add your telephone number to the 'do not
telemarket me' list? In other words, if you do not voluntarily spend your time and add yourself to these
unsubscribe lists, you will continue to be advertised/spammed! It's big business as you can now imagine!

There have been recent debates in Congress to re-evaluate the 2003 CAN-SPAM Act. This has drawn
a lot of lobbyists to contest such reform for obvious reasons of potential profit loss,
if the CAN-SPAM Act was made to be more restrictive.

What makes SafeLists Safe, Secure and Go Beyond Current Laws?

First off, SafeLists protect member privacy, including email addresses, from all other members. Members' will
receive email from others on the SafeList, but are assured that member information, including email addresses,
can not be 'obtained' by any SafeList member, or any other entity for that matter. More importantly,
Safelists operate soley on Double-Optin based mechanisms.

I have personally consulted with the organization known as SpamHaus (spamhaus.org based in the U.K.).
In fact, we agree with the U.K.s DOUBLE-OPTIN approach to the spam problem. The U.K. believes the U.S. to
be lagging behind in the fight against spam. After all, it was the british comedy show, Monty Python, that
first coined to term 'spam' as relating to unsolicited email ads!

To conclude...

We do not condon nor point fingers at any company, because it is really hard to tell
which companies sell their mailing lists and which ones use them legitimately. Example: If
I buy a computer from Dell and I subscribe to their notifications/promotions, I expect to ONLY receive emails
from Dell and no other company. (Unless I authorize otherwise.) Dell has not shown any such activity. That is why
I run Dell computers myself! They are in the business of selling computers. There are some corporations that are
in the business of trading and selling your email addresses and other personal information.

Ask any internet marketer worth asking and they will tell you that the money is in the list, email list that is.

You have probably also read of online marketers making a small fortune from their own lists of eager subscribers. Sounds like it's simply a case of buying a list or building it through web traffic and then cash in through sending a series of emails. This is frankly not the case!

Building a profitable optin email list takes time and effort mainly in building trust with your subscribers, enough for them to feel comfortable adding their payment details to buy your product or service. This does not happen overnight.

Here are three ways that will help you build a profit pulling list of hungry subscribers:

1. Write and submit articles - There is no better way to build your reputation as an expert in your field than to write and submit articles to the article databases. The byline of the article is the perfect place to put a link to your optin form or straight to your product page where you will of course give your visitor an opportunity to subscribe to your list. Prospects are more likely to subscribe to your list if they see you as an expert and you have also begun to build trust aswel.

Many visitors to my site put my name in Google to see exactly who I am. When they finds 1000s of references to my name built over many years online, mostly through written articles, then they can feel a lot more comfortable dealing with me.

2. Know Your Product or Service - Following on from step one, it is extremely important that you know your product in order to inspire confidence in your subscribers and compel them to reach for their credit cards. It is also essential that you are confident in the quality of your product or service. Believe it or not, if you think you are selling crap it will come across in your emails even if you write top class copy your subscribers will sense that something is not quite right.

3. Only recommend quality products and services to your subscribers - I am referring to products besides yours. One great way to build more profit into your list is to recommend other products similar to your own. But beware, the quickest way to ruin your reputation and ensure the downfall of your email lists' ability to pull in profits is to recommend inferior products or services. I tend to stick to the maxim "If I don't use it myself and find it useful I won't recommend it to others". You can't really go wrong if you keep to this principle.

The idea of drafting an email within minutes, sending it to my list and watching orders flood into my email inbox has always appealed to the lazier side of my character and is a dream come true.

Email marketing truely is the lazy mans way to riches BUT it does take a lot of work, preparation and care in maintaining a quality list of subscribers. Following the points above can help you make this a reality.

7 Features of an Effective Email Signature That Gets Results

How well is your email signature working for you? For most people who use email, an email signature is just a basic contact information signature file that they append to their emails without giving it much thought, if they choose to use an email signature at all. However, for online business owners, an email signature can be the least expensive yet most effective tool in your online business marketing toolkit. Why? Because it enables you to promote yourself and your business without any blatant advertising. It's like sending a business card with a call to action in every single email that you send.

Where should you be using your email signature? Here's a quick list:

--on every single piece of email that you send to friends, family members, colleagues, etc. from your computer's email program (Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, etc.)

--in every email that you send in response to a posting on email discussion lists

--in every posting that you make on an online discussion forum

--anytime you send a broadcast email out to your list through your email broadcast service

You never know where you email will end up (how many emails do you forward in one day?) nor who will be reading it, so it pays to attach an effective email signature to everything that you do. It serves as a wonderfully effective free marketing tool that works for you 24/7. I've gotten countless subscribers to my newsletter from simply using a compelling call to action in my email signature.

What are the components of an effective email signature? I've seen horribly long email signatures (as many as 20 lines), signatures missing basic contact information, and email signatures that leave me thinking, "So what?". Here's how you can create an effective email signature that will help you get clients online:

1. Keep it short. Nothing is worse than reading an email signature that's longer than the email itself. To be most effective, limit yourself to no more than 7 lines. As you participate in discussion lists or online forums, the list moderators may limit your signature to as few as 5 lines. So, just like you make your printed business card "Rolodex proof" (i.e. don't put essential contact info at the bottom of the card where it will be lost when holes are punched into it for your Rolodex), keep your most essential info in the first 5 lines of your signature file. That way, if some info is cut off when you post to a discussion forum, it won't be the essential info that you want to convey. Better yet, do as I do and create various email signature files for different uses, including ones specifically created to comply with the rules of various discussion lists to which I belong.

2. Include only essential contact info. This would include your name and title or tag line, as appropriate, phone number, website, and email address. The phone number and email address may be optional, depending on the purpose of your email and how it might be displayed (for example, sometimes an email discussion list will post your email address automatically in the body of your post, so you can use that space in your signature for something else).

Don't list every single way that someone can contact you -- only the most important, essential methods that you prefer. I've seen some email signatures contain 5 phone numbers. The lines listing those phone numbers can be much more effectively used for another purpose. And, make sure your email address is the email address at your website. Sometimes you might not get the option of posting your website URL, so if you can only post an email signature, savvy readers can ascertain your website URL from your signature. Don't use your email signature real estate to give any more free publicity to Yahoo, Google, AOL, Earthlink, or any number of other ISPs.

3. Make an offer for a free introductory product. What's your free giveaway on your site -- an ecourse, email newsletter, special report, ebook, audio or video clips? Give people a reason to visit your site by offering your freebie in your email signature. If your freebie contains info that they want, publicizing it in your email signature is a definite way to get them to visit your website.

4. Auto sendout. Every email program has the capability to automatically append an email signature to every piece of email that you send. Make sure that feature is turned on in your email program so that you don't miss any valuable marketing opportunities. It's tough to contact you if your email is missing its signature file.

5. Plain text or HTML? I'm still a big fan of sending out plain text emails for day-to-day correspondence. For the most part, I don't use fancy fonts or special colors or formatting in my signature file. I want my email signature to be clearly displayed in any email program, and plain text is the best way to accomplish that. There are services like Plaxo (for users of Microsoft Outlook) that will let you create a business card image that is appended to your email as your email signature and import that into Outlook. However, I don't use Outlook and I find these cumbersome, as there isn't a way to cut and paste the sender's contact info into my contact database. Additionally, many online discussion lists and forums don't accept images or HTML in their posts. So, even though the business card images look pretty, I would encourage you to stick with a plain text email signature.

6. Make it clickable. Because you never know what email program your recipient is using, type in a few extra characters in the email address and website URL lines of your email signature file to guarantee that the link will be clickable. For a website URL, type in the entire URL, starting with http:// rather than simply www. to make sure that your link is universally clickable. For your email address, adding mailto: at the beginning of your email address, i.e. mailto:yourname@youremailaddress.com will enable the reader to click on that link and will open a blank email addressed to you in any email program.

7. Use a border. Having a simple border to separate your name as you end an email from your email signature will lessen the confusion as to what is considered the main text of the email versus the email signature. ASCII characters like == or ~~~ will create a simple border that is effective but not distracting.

An effective email signature has incredible power to drive traffic to your website. Take a few moments and evaluate your signature and see if it's doing its best work for you. Your email signature is an incredibly effective marketing tool that can provide great "bang" for almost no bucks
